Toy Stuffing

Every creation you make in amigurumi will need to be stuffed to keep the shape intact. The most common stuffing is polyester fibre fill. A lot of pillows that you can buy in the supermarket or homeware sections will be filled with this. There is nothing wrong with using it but bear in mind who you are making your toy for.

The majority of my creations are made for children. So I always have safety as top priority. The stuffing that I use has been safety tested for flammability, and chemicals. The label to look for when buying stuffing is the European standard, EN71-3.

Phoenix Filling Washable Polyester Fibre toy stuffing, carries the EN71-3 standard and it has been made from recycled plastic bottles! So a win for the environment and for safety.

You can buy this on multiple websites like Etsy, Amazon, LoveCrafts, Hobbi and Wool Warehouse UK. Here is a list of shops you can purchase the Phoenix stuffing from within Irish shops.

Trimits is a great brand to look out for. Its stuffing comes with the EN71-3 label. Like Phoenix above, you can buy this on multiple websites like Etsy, Amazon, LoveCrafts, Hobbi and Wool Warehouse UK. It is hard to find within Irish shops but one place I have found it is The Woolly Castle.

When I make decorative creations, like framed animals, I sometimes use polyester filling from a pillow. Rumour has it that I took stuffing from one of my kids pillows as they were sleeping….jury is still out on that one!

There are numerous other toy stuffing products available on the Irish market.

You will be amazed at the amount of stuffing you will get through. A small bear can use quite a lot. So when purchasing always over estimate rather than under estimate what you will need or your family’s pillows might start disappearing one by one……
