The best yarn for amigurumi is DK Cotton Yarn (8ply). It doesn’t bobble or fray, can be hand washed and dried without issue. The stitching is very defined and creates a beautiful finish.
There are several brands of cotton yarn out there. As the world is full of headlines about climate change these days there is definitely more thought put into what I purchase. Eco-friendly yarn like cotton is top of my list. Here are some brands that provide it (not a conclusive list)
DMC Natural
Drops
Debbie Bliss
King Cole
Paintbox
Rico Creative
Rico Essentials
Rico Ricorumi
Scheepjes
Schachenmayr
Stylecraft
A great site to use to compare yarns is https://yarnsub.com/
I tend to use Paintbox DK Cotton or Stylecraft Naturals Organic DK Cotton. It is sold in balls of 50g with generally 100-125m of yarn per ball. When I discovered Paintbox DK Cotton Yarn, I didn’t realise it was made and sold in the UK only. I now like to buy from Irish stores so have changed my yarn to Rico Ricorumi where possible.

You can see in the gallery shown below how defined the stiches are. Each of these creations were made using a hook varying from size 2.00mm to 2.75mm

There are numerous shops in Ireland where you can purchase 100% cotton yarn. It generally comes in 25g and 50g. The colour range is just gorgeous and once you start looking it will be hard to not buy it all in every colour !
I would recommend buying Rico Ricorumi if you just want to test the waters. It comes in balls of 25g and comes in at under €2. It is beautiful to work with and makes the cutest projects!

Here is a list of shops I know of that stock cotton yarn
- Winnie the Wool Wagon
- Loza Wool
- Springwools
- This Is Knit
- Vibes & Scribes
- Crafty
- Woolly Castle
- The Baldy Sheep
- Home Focus
Organic Cotton Yarn
You will notice that when choosing cotton yarn, some state ‘organic’. Isn’t all cotton organic?! Well no, a lot of cotton is grown with the use of fertilizers and herbicides which impact the way that the plants grow. Organic cotton was grown without using fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides.
These are the brands I am aware of that make 100% natural organic cotton.
